Here are a few goals you can make with your partner going into the new year:
Stay connected
With work, kids, and life in general, sometimes we forget to make time for our relationship. Try making a goal to stay connected with your partner. Whether that’s scheduling weekly date nights, or making sure to check in with each other more often, staying connected is a great first goal. You don’t have to leave the house to spend quality time. Try scheduling a weekly date night and planning to go out on a date bi-weekly or monthly.
Focus on your friendship
Similar to staying connected, prioritizing your friendship with your partner is a great goal to have to reconnect, especially when the responsibilities of everyday life can very easily become overwhelming. Focus on your friendship by taking time to enjoy the fun things together. Enjoy watching a TV show together, and remember to support each other like you would a close friend.
Learn each other’s love languages

Communicating wants and needs
This can be a bit more challenging, however communicating your wants and needs to your partner is great practice in vulnerability, which is what leads to increased intimacy in relationships. Try using Terry Real’s feedback wheel resource to help communicate your wants and needs to your partner.
Setting clear expectations
Whether that’s in terms of responsibilities around the house, or setting clear financial expectations, it’s important to communicate with your partner. According to most studies, the number one topic couples fight about is in relation to money (budgeting, spending, debt, etc).
Set a long-term goal
A long-term goal could be a few months to several years out. Maybe you want to move to a new house, or state, have children, get married, or buy a tandem bike. Use resources like SMART goals (a framework for setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives to help you achieve your goal) to help you solidify your plan. Setting goals is one of the ultimate tests of communication.
